We admit it: With this product the line between ‘practical’ and ‘simply beautiful’ becomes blurred. Although Cohana’s cast-iron ‘button’ is great as a sewing weight or paperweight, it can also be used as a decorative object.
Cohana is a Japanese artists’ collective specializing in the production and distribution of exceptional sewing accessories. In doing so, the makers always fall back on old knowledge. In this case, they were inspired by the traditional Japanese blacksmith’s craft. Nambu Tekki vessels have been cast there since the 17th century. These are iron utensils that have an uneven surface and are finished without an enamel layer. A special final treatment ensures that the vessels do not rust later. Nambu Tekki are extremely durable and are produced only in Japan.
The Cohana button is based on such an object. The mould was designed in such way that the finished iron button fits perfectly in the hand, but still has enough weight (383 g) to serve as a sewing weight or paperweight. Each button has a diameter of 6 cm and is about 2.4 cm high. The ‘buttonholes’ are also pen holders.
